Due to the opening up of the economy and promotion of the free enterprise, there is intense competition in all the sectors. The boundaries of the businesses have become global and even MNCs are entering in to all the business segments.

In the last few years. telecom sector has seen stupendous growth and as a result of this the tariffs have seen huge decline in both national and international segments. Although the telecom market has expanded many folds, the margins for the PCO holders have gone down substantially.

Under the present prevailing situation, there is a question mark on the survival of PCO business. Mere commission on the usage of MCUs is not going to give sufficient revenues to the PCO holders to survive.

Nevertheless, the booths providing services of DOT/ DTS/ MTNL/ BSNL, then and of service providers such as reliance, Tata, Airtel, Idea etc, now, along with the previous named operators, are on the verge of collapse if run the traditional way. The cause is, they have been hurt there where it hurts more, the earning, for the following reasons.

  • Regular lowering of STD/ ISD tariffs
  • Enlargement of local call areas (SDCA)
  • Mushrooming of mobile services
  • Technological development in the form of Internet, Email, Chat, Voice-mail, Voip Etc.
  • Easy availability of landlines with various facilities such as SMS, Callers’ line identification, hand-free access etc.

Is it not astonishing and does it not deserve emergency attention from those at the helm of affairs and those who can both help and gain themselves that despite being the only access for communication till yesterday and the means to intensify tele-density, seemingly, is not cared for?.

  • There were approximately 43 Lakh (4.3 million) STD/ ISD booths inclusive of local PCO outlets, nation-wide.
  • They had helped bridge the tele-density gap in our nation.
  • They were present in every urban & rural area ranging from Kashmir to Kanyakumari.
  • They percolate right-down to tiny villages where they often provide residents with the only access to communicate with the rest of the world.
  • They have provided the optimal utilization of available telecom resources with bare minimum investment.

There was a time Rs.7000 crores worth of unit calls were consumed by STD PCOs in a year yielding about 35% of the total revenue of DOT/ BSNL/ MTNL, also the future is at a low ebb owing drastical decline in unit calls.

Even today, most of the booths serve sizeable Indian citizens who, as yet, depend solely on these booths to keep in touch with their kith & kin, friends and also for their commercial needs.

The fact remains, the PCO booths still exist as a huge infrastructure which if used properly with the right attitude, will certainly provide a strong base to the concerned groups and even the Government. Think of it, avail of the opportunity and reach into a win-win Goal. Yes, WIN-WIN.
